Mark your calendars for a fun-filled Rotary meeting on September 19th at 6:00 PM at the Officer's Club! District 5180 Governor Steve Turner will be attending and sharing his vision for the District for the year to come. DG Turner is well-known for his dynamic leadership, commitment to service, and dedication to club engagement. This meeting promises to be an exciting event, offering a unique opportunity for members to engage directly with Governor Turner. Rotary benefits through our collective efforts in making a positive impact within our community, so whether you are a long-time member or new Rotarian, this meeting is an excellent chance to connect, learn, and be inspired.
We encourage all Rotarians and members of the community to attend and participate in what promises to be one of the highlights of the Rotary Passport One year.
District Governor Steve Turner Visiting September 19th!
Rotary Passport One members teamed up with Adam Campbell and the Active 20/30 Club along with other volunteers to pour drinks at After Shock and at Golden Sky. Great job team for getting out there & getting Rotary recognized in the community!
Rotary Passport One was happy to send a contingent of Rotarians to support the Rotary Club of Elk Grove with their fabulous event, Beef and Reef, this last week. President Lawana, Past District Governor Janice Gage, and Adrianne Pontarelli all enjoyed a night of oysters, tri-tip, and shrimp. The event supported local community programs throughout the Sacramento region. We can't wait for next year!
Rotary Passport One was happy to celebrate '916 Day' with the wider Sacramento community this last week. Several Rotarians volunteered to plant trees in our local parks and helped to beautify these public spaces! Thank you to everyone who helped for providing "Service Above Self" and representing our club so well in the community.
In October we shared all the fun we had at the AfterShock Festival. It's always inspirational to be able to volunteer for an event but also find it to be rewarding for our Rotary Passport One Club. A big round of gratitude for every member that helped work the event.
Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders who work together, become friends, and dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. The work of our members impacts lives at both the local and international levels. If you'd like to meet friends while making a difference join us for our next meeting to learn more.
The members of the Rotary Passport one pulled up their sleeves in order join the fight against hunger. They were able to make an impact by filling food bags and partnering with Rise Against Hunger. It's an amazing way to connect with community and give back.
Aftershock 2022 rocked the Sacramento area with musical acts such as Muse, Evanescence, and Slipknot energizing massive crowds in Discovery Park. Rotary Passport One's Adam Campbell has played a key part in the festival over the years as he helped local nonprofits fundraise by working the bars located throughout the venue. This year we had a strong team of Rotarians who poured beer, mixed cocktails, and kept water flowing for the fans over the four-day music festival. Together we raised more than $3,000 for our club foundation to help with local education, health, and youth projects. If you are interested in helping the Sacramento community, please feel free to join us at an upcoming meeting.
Our very own Rotarian Beth Ellinthorpe was recognized by District 5180 Governor Karen Cendros as a "Top Chef" as one of Rotary Passport One's finest and her commitment to service. Beth was unable to attend, but we are continually proud of the difference she makes for the community and her leadership to our club. Rotary believes in encouraging and fostering high ethical standards in business and professions. Beth balances her work as a realtor with hours of commitments to serving the community. We appreciate the honesty, integrity, and expertise she brings to us in both capacities.
Earlier this summer, Rotary Passport One was proud to welcome back one of our long-term members, and current honorary member, Kwame Acquaah. He told us of the wonderful service work he is doing in Ghana with both his own nonprofit and the club that is currently claiming him as a member (we refuse to say that he is not a current member of our club). Rotary considers honorary membership in a club to be reserved for those who have distinguished themselves through meritorious service and furtherance of Rotary's ideals. Kwame may have moved to another continent, but he shows us that he lives and breathes Rotary through his commitment to service above self.
Rotary Passport One recently had the opportunity to provide service to support members of our military. Our members volunteered with Sacramento Blue Star Moms to prepare care packages for U.S. troops who deployed overseas. Each box contained snacks, toiletries, and other trinkets to help these service members get a little piece of home. This is just one example of the many volunteer service projects that we do in our local community and for communities around the world. If you are interested in public service an fellowship with likeminded people, please join us for dinner on the third Thursday of every other month or contact us about upcoming volunteer opportunities.
Rotary Passport One members put on their comfy shoes and sunscreen to volunteer at Roseville Rotary's 3rd Annual Taco Throwdown! Most of us worked at check-in while others worked as cashiers, tickets, and beer pouring. After ushering in over 800 attendees we got to enjoy some delicious tacos!
This year Passport One teamed up with the John Morse Therapeutic Center to bring some sunshine into the lives of kids who struggle. From providing Christmas gifts, to being a book buddy, to doing a beautification project on campus, this school means a lot to our members and we look forward to continuing this relationship next year.
Passport One members rolled up their sleeves and stacked cases of cookies for area troops to pick up. The biggest order was by a troop that ordered 462 cases. They presold 5,544 boxes of cookies! Hope you've ordered your cookies!
A wonderful fundraiser for Passport One and for Rotary! A big thanks to our very own Bob Mutchler for putting together a fantastic 5 course beer pairing at BJs Restaurant in Folsom. Between the ticket sales, the donations from BJs, the matching funds from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - Polio Plus earned $45,000 tonight! Bob also awarded a Paul Harris to a non-Rotarian. A successful night!
Feeding those in need with the Salvation Army at the Grounds in Roseville. Thank you to our Rotarians who took time out of their Thanksgiving to give back to others in need! #PassportOneGetsItDone!
Our very own, Michael Reinero, was staring in the play - A Night at Tony B's Ristorante Italiano. Several members of our club gathered ahead of time to enjoy a dinner together before venturing over to watch the great performances!
A big welcome to three transferring Rotarians who were inducted into the Passport One Club on November 18th, 2021: Val Mebust (President, Promote Me), Rukhsana (Roxy) Khan (Marketing Director) and Michele Spilman (Executive Assistant). We are so pleased that these Rotarians chose the Passport One club as their home base!
Rotary Passport One was honored to recognize Pat Braziel with her award of a Paul Harris Fellow +7. The Paul Harris award recognizes a person for whom $1,000 has been donated to The Rotary Foundation's efforts to feed the hungry, foster peace, and otherwise support the global community. Ms. Braziel has raised or donated more than $8,000 to support our community and exemplifies the values of Rotary, i.e. Service Above Self.
If you are interested in joining us in serving our community and making new friends, please join us for a meeting!
Rotarian Pat Braziel Earns Paul Harris +7 Recognition
Passport One Club Members teamed up with the Auburn Rotary Club to help the residents at the Rolling Oaks Apartments update their garden beds. Another project doing good in the community!
Rotary Passport One had a wonderful visit with District Governor, Desiree Wilson, at our September meeting. During our meeting District Governor Desiree handed out a Superhero award to one of our deserving club members, Sara Thornros, for not only her tireless work for our Club Service but also for her work behind the scenes to keep the club moving smoothly and for all her help on service projects. Way to go Sara!
Rotary is about building friendships as well as service for the community. Rotary Passport One members met with members of the Rotary Club of Fig Garden from Fresno for a weekend in Yosemite. It was an amazing opportunity, and we can't wait to do it again next year!
The club board met tonight to check out the new location at The Officer's Club at McClellan Park. Looks like a great venue for meetings. More information to be posted on upcoming meetings soon!
Meal packing event for Rise Against Hunger. We packed 6 boxes in 30 minutes which equals 1,296 people in need. Way to go Passport One…way to Get It Done!
In lieu of having a club meeting this month, I would love to get everyone together to support Rise Against Hunger and our very own club member, Jim Quinney. We need about 15-19 club members to participate in meal packing, a trivia contest & a corn-hole contest on July 31st at 11am at the Rise Against Hunger Warehouse,1065 National Drive Ste 3, Sacramento, CA 95834. It's going to be a fun competition against other clubs in the district and we want to show that Rotary Passport One is THE BEST club!
Our club is sponsoring 50% of the registration fee. That means we need volunteers and a little support from our members. With 15-19 people committing to help, we just need $20 per person to meet the registration goals.
So who is with me? Lots of fellowship and supporting a great cause. Please RSVP to me as soon as possible so we can fill up a team & make a difference!
A fun send-off for Past President Bill Bowen held at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Bill was a good sport & allowed some of the club members to shave half his head & half his beard all to raise money for Polio Plus. This was only our 2nd in-person meeting in over a year and what a turn-out it was! Good to see everyone enjoying themselves. More good times to come in the 2021-2022 Rotary Year!
Rotary Passport One wished a bittersweet farewell to one of our favorite members, Dr. Kwame Acquaah last week as he prepares to move home to his native Ghana after 34 years spent living in the United States. Kwame has been a force for peace and community building through our club, and he spoke eloquently about how the Four Way Test matched his personal values in loving our fellow man. We are sure he will continue to be a great Rotarian when he moves to Ghana. In the meantime, we were happy to honor him with his Paul Harris Plus Two Award and Honorary Membership in our club. Rotary builds friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime.
If you are interested in community service and developing friendships with those who value truth, benefiting their fellow man, fairness, and goodwill towards all, then we would welcome you at a future meeting.
Rotary Passport One was proud to participate in the District 5180 Pinewood Derby with our car dedicated to eradicating polio. District Governor Brent Hastey collected the finest Rotary minds to build wooden cars to race down a ramp just as scouts across the country have for generations. The Passport One car, built with great care by our own Bob Mutchler, unexpectedly flew off the track in its first two heats. We believe this was because of issues in how the track was constructed rather than any issues with the vehicle. Our car performed much better in later heats when it wasn't in the first position.
District 5180 has posted a great video of the event starring Michael Reinero and DGN Sidney Smith as commentators. Enjoy!
District 5180's Pinewood Derby - Starring Michael Reinero

Rotary Passport One wants to Thank everyone who came out to support last month's 80s Trivia Night. Your generosity helped us to raise more than $3,000 to support Rotary International's End Polio Now program. The club wants to send a special thank you to our sponsors Albano Dale Dunn & Lewis (Megan Ellinghouse), Techno Fit, LLC (Sara Thornros), Keller Williams Commercial and Healthy Active Aging (Gretchen Tobin), Bowen Law Firm (Bill Bowen), Kay Castro, and Ed Trujillo.
We would also like to make a special acknowledgement of John Waterman who acted as a generous friend of the club to offer three auction items (including a rare first edition book by Paul Harris and autograph by Jonah Salk) which raised more than $1,000 towards ending polio! John may be in the Red Bluff Rotary Club, but he is a dear friend of our club and we hope we can support him in turn. If you are interested in changing lives and building friendships, consider joining us for a meeting!

Rotary Passport One wants to thank everyone who came out to support us at our first fundraiser for the 2020-2021 year. Our club was able to raise $400 for District 5180's program to provide healthy meals to people dealing with famine in Peru. We would like to especially thank our own Sheri Katz who donated back her portion of the winnings from the evening to double our donation! Sheri is an amazing Rotarian and very good at trivia. If you are interested in supporting the District's project you can find more information here.
We are already planning an even bigger and better Trivia Night for April 22nd! We hope you can join us.
Rotary Passport One will be holding our March 11, 2021 meeting via Zoom. Our speaker will be Nick Mori from Sacramento County Department of Public Health. He will be discussing Covid-19, vaccinations, and the plans for reopening the community. We will also discuss our February Trivia Fundraiser and plans for our next event. If you are interested in joining us, please contact President Bill Bowen to get the link.
Rotary Passport One was honored to be recognized at the District 5180 Awards Event held on January 30, 2021. Past President Leigh-Ann Reinero and her board did a fantastic job through a very rough year and were recognized with the Governor's Citation, 3 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, the Foundation award for End Polio Now's Countdown to History, and the Quarantine Survivor Club Award. For a relatively young Rotary club, it was gratifying to see us held in such high esteem at the District level.
We hope that our new club foundation and renewed commitment to service through the pandemic will allow us to reach even greater heights in the coming years. If you are interested in learning more about Rotary and how we serve the community, please contact us or join us for an online meeting.
Rotary Passport One has been working on projects through 2020 that allow us to serve the community while remaining socially distanced and safe. One of those events was the Halloween Drive-BOO hosted by the Fruit Ridge Community Collaborative. Our Rotarians were busy packing goodie bags to be distributed to children eager to celebrate the season. They just sent us the most lovely thank you card. We hope all of our volunteers know how much the community appreciates what you do!
Rotary Passport One is proud to be working with Sunrise Marketplace and KHITS on their November 21, 2020 Turkey & Fixins Food Drive. We are looking for food donations to be made via socially distanced drop offs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as well as volunteers to help direct traffic and collect donations. If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign up with us at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0f4caeab2da0f94-turkey.
This holiday season is going to be very different from previous years. Our recent work with food pantries and other nonprofits in the Sacramento area leads us to believe that we will have many more families that need assistance. If you can help, please let us know.
Rotary Passport One will be holding our second meeting of the 2020-2021 year on September 10, 2020 via Zoom. As much as we want to meet in person, we are taking every precaution to protect the health and well-being of our community. We hope that we will be able to schedule in person events in the near future. Still, this meeting is a treat and it should not be missed. Our speaker will be Brent Hastey, the District Governor of 5180. Brent will be sharing his message about Rotary, District 5180, and what we can expect in the coming year with the unusual circumstances we now found ourselves facing.
If you are interested in joining us for the meeting, please contact President Bill Bowen to get the Zoom link.
September Meeting - District Governor Brent Hastey
Over the last several years, Rotary District 5180 (home of Rotary Passport One) has worked with local government, educators, and nonprofits to fight human trafficking in the Sacramento area. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the fate of our children has once again been brought into focus and there has been a widespread call to focus on the fate of children who are torn from their families and forced into modern slavery. We are happy to share this video so you can see how Rotary leads the way in tackling these serious issues. We look forward to continuing the work of protecting local children.
If you are interested in serving your local community, please consider joining one of our meetings.
Rotary Passport One is happy to announce that Jennifer Jones of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada has been unanimously nominated for the office of the President of Rotary International 2022-23. Jennifer is the President and CEO of Media Street Productions Inc., an award winning television production company in Windsor, ON. She is proud member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland and is a Past District Governor of District 6400. Jennifer served as the Vice President of Rotary International in 2016-2017. She has served the organization as a training leader, moderator, committee vice-chair, coordinator and President’s Representative. She also played a lead role in Rotary’s rebranding effort as the Chair of the Strengthening Rotary’s Advisory Group. Currently, she is the co-chair of the End Polio Now – Make History Today campaign to raise $150-million dollars and she is the promotions chair for the 2019 Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany.
Rotarians from Passport One were busy last week with service projects focused on assisting those members of our community that need food security. President Bill spent a morning working with La Familia in South Sacramento as they distributed fresh produce and school lunches. Beth Ellinthorpe and Sara Thornros spent a day at the Auburn Food Pantry preparing meals and sorting food for distribution. Almost 30 million Americans have reported in recent months that they are struggling with food insecurity and do not have enough to eat. Programs like these are important for helping us pull together to address this problem. We hope to see you volunteering with similar programs in your community, and if you cannot give your time, there is always a need for food and cash donations.
Rotary Passport One will be hosting our first general meeting of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year this Thursday, July 16, 2020. Due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases and shutdowns of local businesses, we will be hosting this meeting in an online format through Zoom. The meeting with be about the process of building community with a dialogue on diversity, inclusion, service, Rotary, and the Sacramento area. Our guest speakers will be Chinua Rhodes and Paul Willis, who have worked for years building community in the region through their shared love of diversity, music, and social justice. f you are interested in attending, please feel free to contact our President, Bill Bowen, to get an invitation to the event.
On the last day of the Rotary calendar, Passport One wants to say thank you to our 2019-2020 President Leigh-Ann Reinero for the amazing work she has done. It would not be hyperbole to say that she led our club through one of the most difficult periods in Rotary history with the ease and confidence of a natural leader. As the community locked down with the Covid-19 pandemic, President Reinero worked to keep our members meeting virtually, organized community service projects, and created online game nights that left all of us in stitches.
We cannot imagine a better leader in these trying times, and we are so happy that she was here when we needed her. She leave big shoes for our next President to fill!
We are down to the final days of the Rotary year and I can't thank you all enough for the opportunity to lead and serve Passport One. It has been such a journey and an honor to represent our club as President.
A huge shout out to our amazing 2019/2020 Board: Bill Bowen (PE/Marketing), Megan Ham (PE/Marketing), David Kenitzer (Treasurer), Sara Thornros (Secretary), Eric James (Membership), Sheri Katz (Service), Al Frumkin (Foundation), and Christie Harrison (Club Admin/Social). They have worked tirelessly to bring us meaningful service opportunities, fun and creative socials, a Rotary education, and they recommended 18 new members to the club. When COVID hit, they put on their thinking caps to make sure we were able to still provide a value to our members. They worked harder and were more challenged than they ever thought possible in a year and they rose to the occasion. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Passport One is five years old and we are continuing to grow and have an impact. It's because of your passion to make your communities and your world a better place that makes Passport One what it is today. Again, I'm so honored to say that I am a member, and now past president, of Rotary Passport One. Thank you all for an experience I will never forget.

Rotary Passport One was proud to make a donation of more than $1,600 in gift cards to Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance. Covid-19 prevents many patients from finding hotels near their treatment centers, so we were happy to make a donation to help cover some of their transportation costs.
Being a club built on service, it's been hard giving back to our communities when we are being ordered to stay home because of COVID19. However, now that the world is beginning to open, I'm ready to get back to doing what I love most, serving those in need.
As Rotarians, we are all philanthropists, whether it's by giving time or by giving money. I'm sure we're all feeling the same pull - to make a difference, especially now. When Rise Against Hunger put the word out they needed help packaging 21,000 bags of food, Mike and I jumped at the chance. Feeling healthy and ready to take on the world, we got out of the house, put on our gloves and masks, and filled 11,000 bags of food with the help of other fellow Passport One members.
Life is much more than sitting in my home waiting for time to pass. I'm so thankful the world is beginning to open up again and that so many of us are healthy. While I understand the need to be cautious, and to wear a mask because it's the kind thing to do, I look forward to us all being together again to do what we do best...serve.
Although Covid-19 has limited our ability to meet in person and work on projects in the community, Rotary Passport One continues to find ways to support those in need in our community. Our members have been participating in neighborhood clean-ups, donating blood, sending messages of hope to our most isolated community members, and planning new and creative ways to support local youth. We plan on continuing our work as the community begins to reopen and hope you will join us in working to provide service above self.
If you're looking for service you can provide from your home, here's an opportunity to provide hope, happiness and a smile right now to seniors, veterans, and women who have suffered from abuse. Trudy Harris has provided us template instructions and mailing addresses and contact information for the following organizations: Eskaton, Snowline Hospice, American Legion Rocklin, and Stand Up Placer
If you'd like to put a smile on someone's face who's struggling, continue reading for how to make that happen.
One more opportunity to get training to provide service from your home:
In the last three weeks, a nonprofit founded by Rotary members, The Global Impact Group, has been instrumental in an effort to roll out a citizen volunteer opportunity called Volunteer Surge. This Group was co-founded by Rotary members in Districts 5160 and 6900, and clubs throughout the country are joining in this effort.
I urge you to click HERE to go onto the TGIG website and learn more. You’ll see that this is an immediate opportunity for us to help our communities, as well as the nation, in the fight against COVID-19!
Click HERE to watch a video of the presentation of this inspirational effort, given to a large group of district governors. It will answer a lot of your questions.
It's an opportunity for new members to get social with our current membership, learn a little about Rotary and have a fun time. You supply your drink and we'll supply the fun.
Keep an eye out for an email from Megan Ham for the Zoom invite.
As we work through Shelter In Place, there is one way you can continue to give back to your community. Several members of Rotary Passport One have gone out to donate blood over the last months. This is a simple but important way to support our health care services. Vitalant is taking reservations! Don't forget that you can tell them the donation is being made on behalf of Passport, so they know who directed you to make your donation.
So these are pretty crazy times, huh? The board and I will be getting together next week (video style) to discuss ways to keep us all connected during this time of unprecedented quarantining. We all love doing community service and we have a few service opportunities below for you to consider. Hopefully we'll find a way to get back to the more hands-on experiences soon.
I'd like to welcome our newest members to the club...Brian & Claudine Niskiand Jim Gragg! The Niski's were recommended to us by Adam Campbell and they are an awesome pair. They are new to Rotary and are raising triplet teens so you can only imagine what their house is like right now! Jim Gragg is a seasoned Rotarian having previously been a member of the Sacramento Club and then the Granite Bay club. He lives and breathes service and is looking forward to continuing his Rotary membership with Passport One.
In the meantime, I encourage you to join in on the District's How You Doin? online get together tomorrow morning. Several of our members will be participating - Mike Reinero is hosting, Dan Chrystal will be providing inspiration, and Barbara Singleterry and I will be panelists. I encourage you to register to receive your link so you can join in the fun.
Rotary Passport One and the Rotary Club of of Roseville worked together to create Emergency Car Kits for The Taylor House, a home for at-risk girls and those transitioning from foster care as well as Care Baskets for Stand Up Placer, a nonprofit agency providing a rape crisis hotline, peer counseling, and shelter for domestic violence victims.
What a great time Passport One had at the joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Roseville!
We performed a joint service project by putting together emergency car kits for Taylor House
and Care Baskets for Stand Up Placer. With each bag and basket, members wrote notes of encouragement to let these women know many people are rooting for them
to continue moving forward.
Big Thanks to Trudy Harris for helping make this happen!
Vitalant (previouslyKnown as Bloodsourse) is reaching out in need of blood donations. If you're healthy and have the time, please consider donating. CLICK HERE to make an appointment.
When asked, please let them know you are donating in the name of Rotary Passport Club #156
Giving blood is a community service activity and equals 2 hours of service.
Still looking for a way to give back during these strange times?
The Mustard Seed School at Loaves & Fishes Homeless Shelter
has an urgent need for sliced bread. They are supporting families that have kids home from school now and are no longer getting the benefit of the meals programs at their school - for many, a nutritious breakfast and lunch was served to the kids under states and federal nutrition programs. The need for additional food support has increased quite a bit for not only the kids, but their families as well.
They can actually use any type of snack for the lunches - but bread is vital to put together a nutritious lunch they can hand out to their clients.
So... if you have the opportunity to drop a few loaves off on your way to work, on your way home, or if you are just out for a drive, spread some love with a little bread.
You can drop off donations Mon- Fri from 7 am to Noon at the Loaves & Fishes warehouse, 1321 North C Street. You simply pull up and someone will come get the item, you don't even leave your car.
Due to our current situation with the Corona Virus, the District has chosen to postpone this event.
HOWEVER
If you still wish to participate in the challenge, you are welcome to do so!
"As Rotarian, TAKE the CHALLENGE: Donate $75 to feed one child for a year. Click Here
Also please email 10 friends this letter,Click Here asking of them to help with this event. Remember if they contribute they will be invited to the event (date still unknown), so they can have a hand in making food packets."
Rotary Passport One is always happy celebrate the women who make our club exceptional! It is worth noting that 32 of the 55 current members of our club are women. The next time someone tells you that Rotary is an organization for old men, tell them to think again!
Hello Rotarians! Passport One is looking for officers, board members, and committee members to help with the coming year!
Please consider joining us because we always need your vision, passion, and support, and please encourage those you think would help lead our effort to have fun as we support our local community and communities around the world.
We have openings and need help with committees where our work is carried out (community service, international, and foundation), communication/participation (marketing, membership, and club service), and governance and fundraising.
Board meetings are held once a month and last only an hour while committees set their own schedules to match the schedules of members, so there shouldn't be too large a drain on your time.
Contact President Elect Bill Bowen at hflipper@gmail.com or (916) 532-9451 to tell us where you want to help. Thank you!
We have made two reservations for two students to attend this summer's RYLA camp.
If you know a teen or know someone with a teen that will be either graduating high school this June, 2020 or will be a Senior in the following school year, they are eligible to apply.
Rotary Passport One is proud to once again be hosting Wined Up for Youth on May 16, 2020 at the Citrus Heights Community Center. This is our annual fundraiser for youth programs in the community and allows us to sponsor young people for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and other meaningful programs. This year should be unique as we are trying a new location and coordinating with Rotary District 5180 to hold the event with the District's awards celebration. You can find more information at www.winedupforyouth.com.
Rotary Passport One packed and delivered over 65 drawstring backpacks filled with nonperishable food for the pre-k - 8th grade students at the Mustard Seed School run by Loaves & Fishes. These bags are distributed to the kids when they leave for the weekend so they are guaranteed meals while not at school. Also delivered was a check donated by member Adam Campbell to help with the schools other needs for the kids.
Trivia Night at Monk's Cellar in Roseville was one for the books! We had two teams...the first Passport One team won the whole kit and kaboodle (April Kentizer was a ringer!!!) while the other team brought up the rear. Love that we were on opposite ends of the board but I know we all had a great time racking our brains. Can you name four countries in Africa that are only 4 letters?

What a moving opportunity to join the Rotary Club of West Sac Centennial at the Sacramento National Cemetery in Dixon to help remove wreaths from the graves of our veterans. This is an annual activity that comes up so if you missed it this year, mark next year's calendar for the second weekend in January. Thanks Sam Anderson, Pat Braziel, Greg Dixon, Ray Ward and Leigh-Ann Reinero

Come lend your voice to the Strategic Planning Committee on how Passport One will look in the the next 5 years and hear about the progress of the newest Passport club being developed in the District. Please RSVP to Leigh-Ann!
On a cold, but beautiful, Saturday morning, members of Passport One and the Rotary Club of W. Sac Centennial ventured to the Sacramento County National Cemetery to collect holiday wreaths placed at the headstones of our amazing veterans. It's a moment we won't soon forget.
As we get ready for a new decade, the members of Rotary Passport One wish you Happy Holidays! Our next meeting will be a special opportunity for service as we join Rise Against Hunger on January 9, 2020 for a meal packing event at their Sacramento facility. Please remember to bring a nonperishable food item, as we will also be collecting food for local students in need.
It's a new year AND a new decade and new opportunities to connect Passport One with Rotary! The board has been working hard to create a calendar that will inspire you to have fun while also giving back. Our first meeting (Jan 9) finds us touring Rise Against Hunger's new facility as well as packaging weekend backpacks of food for the students at Mustard Seed. We've also been invited by the W. Sac Centennial Club to help with their service project of picking up Wreathsplaced for our veterans at a cemetery in Dixon. We've also got a trivia night planned for January 14th and Christie will be getting details out shortly.
Our two biggest events coming up, where we will need all hands on deck will be the Roseville Club's Taco Throwdown on April 18th and Wine'd Up for Youthon May 16th. Each of these events will help youth within our communities as well as Rotary youth programs. Please mark you calendars so you can make a difference in these kids' lives.
Rotary Passport One was thrilled to celebrate the life and service of Past District Governor and current Passport member Sam Anderson. Sam has had long commitment to Rotary service and was the District 5180 Governor in 2001-2002. We were also honored to be joined by Past Rotary International President Rick King who spoke eloquently about how his time as President taught him to value the people who serve Rotary and step forward to take action and support their communities. In his eyes, Sam was one of those special Rotarians who always did what he said he would do and could be counted on through thick and thin. Other members of Rotary Passport One, including President Leigh-Ann Reinero, Founding President Michael Reinero, Past District Governor Janice Gage, and Al Frumkin also shared memories of how Sam has served Rotary and the community over the years.
Rotary Passport One is hosting our third general meeting of the year on November 14, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ramada Inn at 2600 Auburn Boulevard in Sacramento, California. Please join us for dinner as we discuss the Rotary Foundation, how it impacts our communities, and have a great time getting to know one another better.
The next meeting for Rotary Passport One will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. Please note that we are meeting at a different location, the Citrus Heights Community Center in the Senior Center Room. This will be a great evening of fellowship, fun, and learning about our ongoing work in the community. This will also be a great opportunity to hear from some students who have participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards ("RYLA") program. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where you develop your skills as a leader while having fun and making connections. District 5180 and Rotary Passport One have supported students at weeklong camps in the local wilderness. Participants learn to build communication and problem-solving skills, discover strategies for becoming a dynamic leader in their own community, and form lasting friendships.
The Citrus Heights Community Center is located at 6300 Fountain Square Drive, Citrus Heights, CA 95621.
In January 2019, Rotary International's General Secretary John Hewko gave a powerful speech regarding bringing innovation and flexibility into the Rotary model. Rotary Passport One was honored that Mr. Hewko specifically referenced our own club's development and the ways in which we have adapted to meet the needs of new Rotarians. In a few short years, our model of flexibility in meetings and affordable dues has spread to more than a dozen passport clubs around the world. We agree with his concern that Rotary is at a crossroads regarding meeting the needs of our communities. We can choose to innovate to better serve our communities or we can choose to resist change and loose touch with our stated purpose of Service Above Self.
If you are curious about Rotary, please visit one of our meetings or socials to see how you can connect to others in the community who are interested in building strong professional skills while making new friends and serving the community. We welcome all guests and look forward to seeing you in the future!
You can find a pdf with Mr. Hewko's full comments here.

Members from Rotary Passport One enjoyed a fantastic night that included dinner at Mooyah and then hopping over to the Rocklin Theater to see some crazy good talent perform West Side Story! It was great fun to see Past President Michael Reinero take the stage in uniform and to see Rotarians outside of a normal meeting. We can't wait to see the next performance!
Thanks to everyone that attended our General Meeting In April. Past District Governor, and wine connoisseur, Brian Moors is shown holding a box of white zinfandel that was presented to him as a thank you gift for speaking to our club. He spoke specifically about the wine that will be available at our Wine’d Up for Youth event on May 11th. If anyone knows about wine it’s Brian. He is referred to as the district’s “Chief Grape” and he is a wine judge for events in our area.
Our Happy Dollars collector, Michele Mutoza, told us she will soon be teaching a class in manners. Sam Anderson asked her if the class will be about bad manners.
$155 for a bottle of wine? Yep! After a fierce bidding war with Pat Braziel, Charlie Harrison bought a bottle of fine wine donated by PDG Brian Moore., for $155. Charlie must really like wine.
On April 6, our partner club, the Rotary Club of Roseville, threw a great community fiesta with their Taco Throwdown and our fellow Passport One members were onsite to assist in making the event a success (and eat their weight in Tacos!)
Last Thursday we had a wonderful partner meeting with The Rotary Club of Roseville. Everyone at the meeting was introduced so we could all learn about each other. Then our very own President Carol Langley spoke about our club. Then Roseville's youth exchange student spoke about her home country of Switzerland. Then, our very own Eric James hosted a Roseville versus Passport version of Rotary Feud. It was a wonderful lunch and a great meeting!
This year's RI Convention comes to Atlanta. Starting on June 10 and running through June 14, one of the main highlights is Bill Gates to speak about the importance of our continued commitment to a polio-free world.
