I want to thank our Club Administrator, Christie Harrison (aka our 'Social Guru'), along with all of you that participated in the Passport Social. Mid-Town Sacramento's Zocolo’s Restaurant made a great environment for getting together with our fellow club members and guests for a bit of Rotary friendship and fun. Even better, a few of those guests are now wanting to join our club! If you missed out on this social mixer, never fear. Check out our Calendar of Events for future socials, meetings and community service opportunities. You won’t want to miss out on all the fun (or hours towards your community service)!
On another note...yesterday, in my travels around town for work, there I was, sitting at an intersection waiting for the traffic light to change. All of a sudden, crossing the intersection in front of me was a brand new Ford van full of children. What caught my eye was the big Rotary sign plastered all over the side of it. This was the van that was donated through Rotary Grants and a couple of our local Rotary Clubs earlier this year. I thought how cool it is to see Rotary at work in the community. It was especially exciting for me as I knew that I was a small part of acquiring that van for those children. You just never know how the things we do in Rotary can benefit people we've never met.
Join us to celebrate the holidays! Meet and mingle with old and new members...take photos with Santa...and in the spirit of Rotary, support our community!
Bring a $10 - $25 gift card (Target, Wal-Mart, etc) to be donated to Lilliput Children's Services, a Northern California non-profit specializing in foster care and adoption services. As you all know, foster children have many needs, but at this time of the year, wouldn’t it be a beautiful gift if we could help them buy something special for themselves?
*In April 1979, RI President Clem Renouf read an article about the World Health Organization. It said that for the first time in history, the WHO had succeeded in eliminating a disease – smallpox. The cost was about $100 million. When Renouf returned to his office, he telephoned his good friend and Rotarian, Dr. John Sever. Sever was a microbiologist who dedicated most of his life to vaccine research. Renouf asked him if there were any diseases Rotary might be able to help eradicate. Dr. Sever did not hesitate in recommending poliomyelitis.
*In the 1940’s and 1950’s, polio was the most feared disease in much of the developed world. It was very contagious, and one out of 10 people who contact polio died. Two to three polio victims were paralyzed for life.
*In 1954, Dr. Albert Sabin, an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Cincinnati, produced the first oral polio vaccination to prevent the disease. He believed that with the use of his vaccine, it was indeed possible to eradicate polio.
*In 1979, the RI Board adopted the recommendation to eradicate polio and relieve its consequences throughout the world.
On September 29th, in the early hours of the morning, President-Elect, JoAnne Tanner and 6 Passport Members created a Flash Mob for the Roseville Sunrise Rotary Club Meeting (no dancing was involved). Such a surprise created a lot of smiles and real excitement among the Roseville Sunrise Club members. Like always, it's fun to attend other Rotary club meetings but better yet, it's great to connect with Rotarians from outside of our club! Stay tuned for our next Flash Mob opportunity
Our Mid Week – Mid Town Mixer at Zocolo’s was a huge hit! We had about 30 Passport Members attend and even a Past District Governor. Each time we have one of these events, I meet so many interesting people and learn fascinating things about our Members. If you haven’t had a chance to join us at an event, please take a look at the calendar on Club Runner and plan to attend one. Our next event is the “Glitzy” District Foundation Dinner on Saturday, 10/22/16 and then on November 10th, we will have our next Quarterly Mixer. As I plan for our December event, I would like to incorporate a holiday theme, so if anyone has suggestions or recommendations, I am all ears!!
Another month has passed and it's time to submit your volunteer hours. Whether you volunteered your time with another organization (local food banks, St Vincent DePaul, Girl Scouts, etc), donated blood, or helped out another Rotary club with an event or community service, you can submit your hours at the link below.
