PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

Greetings Rotary Passport Club Member!

This newsletter is predominantly a reminder of our upcoming events next Tuesday and two weeks from Saturday.  Please read on to make sure you are not left out!

RECAP Foundation Dinner – Last Saturday night, we had 20 of our members and spouses attend the District 5180 Foundation Dinner.  Our very own JoAnne Tanner served as one of the “Red Carpet Interviewers” and did our club proud.  The event was definitely different from previous year’s events.  Not only were there over 460 people in attendance, but the energy in the room was electric all night.  MC Jean Irwin-Hatfield of the Historic Folsom Club kept things light and moving, while the featured speaker, Steven Solomon from the Rotary Foundation Staff amazed the capacity crowd with his Rotary journey, from scholarship winner to ambassador of world peace.  He let us in on how Rotary gave him two internationally renown friends, Desmond Tutu and Jane Goodall. Our District Governor, Glenn Fong shared a proud moment as his daughters, Sarah and Katy, and his wife, Elise, all received Paul Harris Fellows for their “Cookies to End Polio” campaign which raised over $3,000 for polio during the 41 District Governor visits made by his family during the year.  If you missed the event this year, make sure you put it on your calendar for next year, as the event seems to be making the turn into something really special.

CLUB BELLS, GAVELS and BANNERS, OH MY! – During the Foundation Dinner event, the organizers needed to borrow a bell and gavel from a District 5180 club for use during the dinner.  It is considered an honor to have your bell used at the dinner.  Since the District purchased ours for us, and we are the most recent club chartered by the District, I was asked to offer up ours to serve the purpose.  Of course, I said “YES”, but when I went to the box that housed our bell, the bell was missing.  Apparently, after our last meeting was over, as I was working my tail off to clean up and return everything we borrowed, someone went into my packed up materials and removed it.  Because I was never notified about this “steal” by anyone “holding the bell for ransom”, I can only assume that the bell was truly stolen and that we no longer have one.  This is disappointing on many levels. But I have decided that life goes on, and so will our club, without a bell.  The cost is way to high for our club to afford

TURN IN Service Reports for October – In January, I will be posting a progress report on our member’s quest to “Save Lives” through their community service hours and donations.  The only way I can accurately do that is to have members submit their hours to me at michaelreinero@yahoo.com.  If you haven’t yet found your groove in service, don’t fret.  There are tons of opportunities coming your way this holiday season.  Check our Upcoming Events calendar often and keep your eyes open.  Many people need help this season and we are just the group to give it to them.

NEW DATE For The Next Membership Mixer – In February, our Membership Mixer will now be on Monday, February 1, 2016.  Please make sure you save the date!!

That’s all for now. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Yours in Rotary,

President Mike
