Rotary Foundation Named #1 in the World!

Our Rotary Foundation has received the prestigious honor of being named the 2016 Outstanding Foundation by the Associated of Fundraising professionals. (AFP).

“While almost everyone is familiar with Rotary, not everyone may realize just how much impact Rotary and the Rotary Foundation have had on countless people and communities across the globe,” said AFP President and CEO Jason Lee. “On behalf of the entire charitable sector and people around the world, all of us at AFP are honored to be able to recognize The Rotary Foundation as our 2016 Outstanding Foundation.”

We were recognized for spending $3 billion on projects that promote peace, fight disease, support education, save mothers and children and grow local economics in the world.

The AFP also commented on our PolioPlus efforts. They noted that since PolioPlus was launched in 1985, we have contributed $1.6 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than two billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease.

Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee spoke for Rotary International when she said, “We are honored to receive this recognition from the AFP, which gives us even more reason to celebrate during our centennial year. The continued strong support of Rotary members will help us keep our promise of a polio free world.”

The Rotary Foundation will receive the award at AFP’s 2017 International Fundraising Conference in San Francisco April 30-May 2, 2017.

In late September, President Elect JoAnne Tanner and six Passport members formed a Flash Mob for the Roseville Sunrise Rotary Club meeting. This surprise so early in the morning created a lot of smiles and real excitement among the Rotarians. Like always, it's fun to attend other Rotary club meetings—but better yet, it's great to connect with Rotarians from outside of our club!

We have more Flash Mobs in store for other clubs around District 5180. If you'd like to help coordinate the next Flash Mob or just want to volunteer to attend,

Passport Rotarian's Passion Projects

Stop Hunger Now was founded by Ray Buchanan a Methodist Minister in 1998. In 2006 Ray and his team developed what has become a very successful meal packing model and this past year we packed over 56 million meals in the US and in several other countries. Our meals are used in a variety of ways including disaster relief, but the main focus is to help in developing countries by supporting educational programs like; school feeding programs, vocational education opportunities, early childhood development programs and orphanages. Meeting nutritional needs and supporting education are key ingredients in helping to end hunger and poverty worldwide.

I became involved after learning about the success SHN had at St. Andres Episcopal School in Hinche, Haiti. This school located in the central plateau area grew from 35 students to over 1200 and much of their growth and success is attributed to the school feeding program and partnering with SHN. School attendance is dramatically enhanced when the parents know their child will be fed a good hot meal. I now work as a volunteer (CHEF) Certified Health Event Facilitator in an attempt to increase meal packing events in the Sacramento region. This year we had a very fun and successful packing event with the Citrus Heights Rotary Club being the host.

These events are perfect for Rotary Clubs; hands on international service project, builds membership, enhances public image, fun team building activity and a great youth services project. Businesses, churches and many other organizations have participated by hosting an event for a variety of reasons. They all share the same feeling at the end of a two hour event; you had fun and most importantly you did something good and you were part of making a positive change in the world. I look forward to meeting my fellow Passport Rotarians and I hope we can all work to end hunger and poverty by 2030.

Many questions have come up about how to earn the 40 hours of service. Here are a few examples:

Give Blood in the name of Rotary Passport (2 service hours)

Volunteer at your local food bank

Volunteer at a community garden

Volunteer at a local school

Help other Rotary Clubs with Service Projects

Attend Rotary events (Yes, you can earn hours just by having fun at an event you supported)

Attend Rotary Meetings including our own club's

Become an officer, board member, or chairperson for Passport (Automatic 40 hours...Talk with Dwight about available positions)
